BOTH/AND
Universities serve as transitions between different spaces—between learning and practice, academics and careers, the present and the future. Independent Sino-foreign cooperative universities represent a unique intermediate state—transitional and cross-border—as exemplified by Michael Graves College, which is both Chinese and American, or Chinese-American. In other words, it embodies both cultural exchange and the creation of a new culture. This exhibition, titled "Common/Harmony," explores how the fundamental context of this liminal space, situated between two worlds, incubates a design education culture characterized by cross-border mixing, East-West coexistence, and interdisciplinary heterogeneity. Essentially, it showcases the works and graduates of the School of Design and Architecture (SoD and SoPA), which create and co-create within the framework of "Common/Harmony." Our exhibition is divided into two rooms. The first room displays works by students from our School of Design (SoD), focusing on graphic design and product design. The second room showcases designs and research collaborations between students and faculty from our School of Public Architecture (SoPA). The design works in the first room include: "PRE," a set of furniture and a magical puzzle that requires interaction to open and operate, with an elusive structure. "Rural One," a modular camping cooking system that attempts lightweight design and creation in terms of materials and space, while also connecting with the camping culture of the past. "SO DOPE," a text installation that integrates human and computer design and interaction, as well as patterns of light and dark. A series of health-related graphic design data visualizations, such as "Co-Sign," "Concern," and "United Toadstool Kingdom," which are both infographics and interactive, tangible pieces. The architectural works in the second room are supplementary components of the architecture curriculum, representing extracurricular collaborations between professors and students. These projects are symbiotic endeavors that blend design and research, architecture and exhibition, professional and academic domains. They include a series of campus buildings and infrastructure projects soon to be implemented at Wenzhou-Kean University, such as: "Travellers amid Streams and Mountains," the main gate and a culminating architectural feature of the Wenzhou-Kean University campus. "Covered Bridge," a new campus bridge and social space inspired by the covered bridges of Taishun County, resulting from an in-house student design competition. "Bifurcation: Land-scape Interventions in Bordering Settlements," a research and exhibition work co-authored by professors and students, recently exhibited at the 2023 Venice Biennale. "Common/Harmony" is curated and designed by the Wenzhou-Kean Design Lab (WKDL).

Wenzhou-Kean University is an independent Sino-foreign cooperative university nestled amidst the mountainous scenery of southern Zhejiang. It offers an American curriculum taught in English, integrated with a dual certification system that incorporates a Chinese context. Michael Graves College, under which there are the School of Public Architecture (SoPA) and the School of Design (SoD), provides students with dual-degree programs in architecture, graphic design, product design, and interior design from both China and the United States (with the addition of an NAAB-accredited Master's degree program in architecture). These two schools share the space of the Ge & Kai Building, a vibrant new facility that houses design studios, exhibition spaces, and creation workshops. The collaborative foundation created by these two universities, which spans national borders, has been transformed into a unique design education culture of East-West heterogeneous coexistence through these two schools. This is a place for cross-national and interdisciplinary design experimentation and exploration. Michael Graves, an American postmodern architect, product designer, and professor at Princeton University in the late 20th century, exemplified the combination of design and practice, spanning various scales and disciplines, designing for all people, and integrating design practice with teaching. Michael Graves College emphasizes a comprehensive education that includes learning beyond and between classrooms, providing students with opportunities to participate in faculty-led projects as co-designers and co-creators, experiencing local and international vertical and interdisciplinary design, research, academic, and community service projects. Through reflective and critical practice, these projects aim to promote, integrate, embed, and transcend the theories and knowledge acquired in the classroom.
