设计:实践出真知

Design: Public-through-Practice

温州肯恩大学在本次教博会上展览以公共“房子”作为“实验室”的想法为灵感, 展示来自学生和教师的建筑和设计图纸、模型、家具、产品设计、书籍以及艺术作品。 我们欣赏和质疑当代设计文化,尤其是在中国,后现代主义呈现出共存、交融、复 制的特点。因此,“设计 : 实践出真知”展览作为迈克尔·格雷夫斯建筑与设计学院 新作品的集合,进一步反映了中美设计教育、基于学术的设计实践和中美设计行业 之间的关系。本次展览通过工作室、公开课、讲座、基于实践的研究和基于实践的 设计实验室(WKDL)的新兴项目,探索一所设计学院及其“公共实践”的设计原 则。作品包括建筑系学生为国际竞赛设计的 3D 作品“小房子”;平面设计学生的 UI/UX 原型设计和宣传视频;温州肯恩大学公共建筑学院的第一本论文集《基础设 施与景观》;以中国传统设计为灵感的数字化胶合板家具设计;一个由建筑系学 生 和生物系学生跨学科设计的“蝙蝠屋”原型。 该展览由温州肯恩大学设计实验室(WKDL)在总监大 卫·瓦迪(David Vardy)的 领导下设计和策划,并已“ 预循环”:意先被建构,再被解构,最后作为永久性艺 术装置被建构于温州肯恩大学建筑与设计学院大楼—— 葛和凯楼。

The Wenzhou-Kean FutureLab exhibition— ‘Design: Public-through-Practice’— is inspired by the idea of a public ‘house’ as ‘laboratory’; and here exhibits its own collection of architecture and design drawings and models, furniture, design objects, books, and art; the work of students and faculty together. We may appreciate and question in contemporary design culture, particularly in China, postmodern characteristics of coexistence and hybridity, and also replication. The exhibition ‘Design: Public-through-Practice’ is a curated collection of new work from the Michael Graves College of Architecture and Design, and is further a reflection on the relationship between Chinese—American design education, academic-based design practice, and the design industry of America and China. The work explores a design school and its ‘public-practicing’ of design; through its studios, its public lectures and talks, its practice-based research and scholarship, and the emergent projects of its practice-based design-lab (WKDL). The range of pieces includes architecture students 3D printed ‘tiny-houses’ designed for an international industry competition; graphic design students UI/UX design prototypes and promotional videos;‘Infrastructure and Landscape’, a collection of essays and the first book of the Wenzhou-Kean School of Public Architecture; digitally fabricated plywood stools inspired by traditional Chinese design; and a prototype for a ‘Bat-House’, the result of an interdisciplinary design collaboration between architecture and biology faculties and students. The exhibition was designed and curated by the Wenzhou- Kean Design Lab (WKDL) under Director David Vardy, and has been ‘pre-cycled’; meaning designed to be constructed then deconstructed, then constructed again; its final resting place; a permanent installation within the new Wenzhou-Kean University School of Architecture and Design building; Ge Hekai Hall.

In November 2021, Wenzhou-Kean University— the prestigious international joint-venture of Wenzhou University China and Kean University America— celebrates its 10th year. With a newly built campus in the beautiful township of Li’ao Wenzhou, an international practice-focused faculty teach courses in Architecture, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, and Interior Design. Students earn dual-degrees, with dual-accreditation (USA + China), opening possibilities for further study (or a career) in the east or the west. The curriculum is American, all teaching is in the English language, and the student body is Chinese American. The Wenzhou-Kean Michael Graves College of Architecture and Design is the first Sino-American design-school to establish a campus in China. A Sino-foreign educational innovator, the Michael Graves College is dedicated to its ‘third-mission’, of ‘making design public’, through open talks, exhibitions, and through design itself— the college home to the newly established Wenzhou-Kean Design Lab (WKDL).
