The Main Exhibit of the Shanghai Jiao Tong School of Design’s FourC Challenge 24-hour Design Charrette
设计教育是时代发展需求的反映,也在相当程度上起到了着传承文化、改善生活、引领社会、改变世界、创造未来的重要作用。如今,世界正在经历百年未有之大变局,设计教育也面临着重大的挑战:全球化时代的来临,对设计教育的国际化有了更高的要求;信息化、数字化及人工智能的飞速发展,对设计师提出了数字化素养、智能化创新能力的新要求;全球疫情防控常态化给设计教育带来了挑战,且引发了对设计价值的思考。新时代赋予了设计新使命、新角色、新方法和新工具,设计教育也应因时制宜地进行改革与发展。上海交大设计学院以独创性的方式,连续两年成功举办FourC Challenge 24小时设计挑战赛,为设计教育的前沿发展提供了新的尝试。FourC Challenge旨在通过活动倡导学生关注人类社会发展趋势,在实践中创新思路,寻找解决问题的最优设计,同时要有勇气去打破和颠覆,打造具有社会和产业价值的作品,将学科理论和实践相结合,共同服务于可持续、健康、美好的人居环境营造。创造(Create)、联结(Connect)、相通(Communicate)、合作(Collaborate),FourC召集来自五湖四海的学子在云端相会,多学科之间的合作及跨文化背景的碰撞为设计提供了充足的养分,师生们通过创新设计思维,思考后疫情时代的设计变革,深刻体悟人类命运共同体的意义和内涵,积极展现当代设计青年学子的责任与担当。
Design education is the reflection of the developmental needs of an era. And during a certain period, it will provide the important functions of transmitting culture, improving life, guiding society, changing the world, and constructing the future. At present, the world is experiencing a once in a century major transformation, and design education is also facing serious challenges. The advent of globalization also presents higher requirements for the internationalization of design education. The rapid development of information and digital fields as well as artificial intelligence has presented the need for digital training and requirements, as well as new requirements for intelligent creative ability. The normalization of requirements for prevention and control of the global epidemic has presents new challenges for design education, sparking new thinking about the value of design education. The new era has endowed design with a new life, a new role, new methods, and new tools. Design education thus must reform and develop according to current circumstances. Shanghai Jiao Tong School of Design has in an innovative manner conducted two consecutive years of the 24-hour FourC Challenge, providing a new venture at the forefront of the development of design education. The FourC Challenge’s aim is to encourage students to pay attention to the developmental trends of human society through activities and innovative ideas in practice. It allows students to derive optimal designs to solve problems, and at the same time to courageously break and subvert conventions, and create works with social and industrial value, integrating theory and practice. It allows them to jointly provide for the creation of a sustainable, healthy, and beautiful human environment. Through the themes of Create, Connect, Communicate, and Collaborate, FourC convenes students from all corners of the world to “meet in the cloud,” and through multi-disciplinary cooperation and the collision of cross-cultural backgrounds to provide sufficient nourishment for design. Through such innovative design thinking, teachers and students think about the changes in design in the post-epidemic era. The result is a deep confrontation with the meaning and connotations of a community of common destiny for mankind, and actively demonstrate the responsibilities of contemporary design students.

Design education in the built environment at Shanghai Jiao Tong University can be traced back to the early twentieth century. In December 2017, the University grouped the design related disciplines scattered in different schools, and amalgamated three departments, Architecture, Design and Landscape Architecture, to establish the new School of Design. The new discipline cluster, incorporating the above 3 disciplines and named “innovative design”, has been identified by the university as one of the key 17 “double first class” discipline clusters which will receive significant future support and investment from the university. Over the past 30 years, the design disciplines at Shanghai Jiao Tong have pursued a harmonious communion of humanities, arts, science, and technology for educating elite talents in the built environment, art, and design fields. The programs have been distinguished by attributes of social conscience, leadership, cosmopolitanism, and truth-seeking spirit. Their achievements in education, research, practice, social service, and international reach have earned worldwide recognition. In the 2019 QS subject ranking, “Architecture and the Built Environment” at Shanghai Jiao Tong was ranked as the 50th in the world, and the ranking rose to 47 in 2020. The “Art and Design” program has been ranked among the world’s top 100 programs in recent years.
