“LSF: Design of the New Relations”
The environments we inhabit and in which we interact as human beings are defined by the interweaving of physical and immaterial spaces - liquid and fluid - and historical, social and technological time, which outline their characteristics and morphologies. With digital technologies, it is possible to make a bidirectional and constant transition from the physical scale, which represents the container, to the digital scale, which constitutes the content. Multisensoriality, defined by the link between perception and the emotions that derive from it, becomes a fundamental element for the understanding of the human being and a fertile ground for innovative planning. The H2H approach brings human kind back to the center of the design of new relationships that, through design, allow the most profitable communication between the actors involved, reaching innovative solutions, both technological and meaningful. The EDME laboratory, within the Politecnico di Milano, is the result of a path of multidisciplinary integration (transdisciplinary) that synthesizes, in a systemic perspective, multi-scalar relationships that delineate the complex identity of a tool for investigation, interpretation and representation of experiential scenarios, experimentation and research. EDME integrates, in a physical space, innovative ICT technology and materials of the latest generation, to simulate complex activities and interactions. Didactics goes hand in hand with research: the Final Synthesis Workshop "Design of the New Relations" concludes the Master's degree course in Integrated Product Design at the Design Department of Politecnico di Milano. The aim of the course is to integrate tools, methods and knowledge acquired during the training path, in order to manage the design complexity related to the product-system, with a strong focus on innovative issues from a social, environmental, cultural and technological point of view. The Laboratory is divided into different phases that simulate the development of a professional project in collaboration with the companies involved: team building, analysis, development of a scenario, development of a concept. An interdisciplinary way to make innovation, with a mix of skills and approaches that creates synergies with high design potential.
School of Design, Politecnico di Milano
In 1993 Milan, with its Politecnico, became the elective birthplace of the Degree Course in Industrial Design, the first of its kind in Italy. The Politecnico is a place of avant-garde training, a meeting point of different cultures. It links architectural and artistic studies, with their creativity and focus on form, to technical, scientific and engineering studies. In addition, this university is noteworthy for its longstanding dialogue with the great entrepreneurial management tradition of small and medium enterprises which enrich the territory of Lombardy and of Italy in general. The history of the Degree Course in Industrial Design – Design Faculty since June 2000 and now the School of Design – is characterized by its constant desire to experiment innovative, experimental development lines that respond to the real market needs of contemporary society. The School of Design in the Politecnico di Milano is today the largest international university for the training of product, communication, interior and fashion designers, both by number of students and of teaching staff. It is active in the recently built Milan campus. The following figures give some idea of its extent: approx. 5000 students, over 450 teaching staff and a further 400 or so research and teaching assistants working in various capacities. Degree programs are organized at two levels: 3 year first level degree (Bachelor or B.Sc) and a further 2 year second level degree “Laurea Magistrale” (Master or M.Sc). According to “QS Rankin by Subject” the School of Design is 1st in Italy, 2nd in Europe and 5th in the world.
