re:connect
In August 2021 the students on the MA Interior, Architectural and Spatial Design (IASD) programme, presented their work in the exhibition entitled re:connect. This was the first time they were able to physically show their work together. Due to the pandemic, meeting in person was difficult, but despite these unique circumstances, the students formed a strong cohort, using their diverse cultural experiences and approaches to inform and learn from each other. It showcases the work of this cohort, who are graduating in November 2021. Their diverse backgrounds spanned 15 time zones and 9 countries, and allowed for a rich variety of responses to the programme, allowing each to define their own work and journey as a Master of Interior, Architectural and Spatial Design. The work you see here at FutureLab is a physical manifestation of the work and connections made after a year of primarily digital collaborations. It demonstrates the various lenses through which the students were taught to look at and engage with a key building in Edinburgh. This developed their understanding of the subject in relation to different scales and design approaches. re:connect focuses on a series of projects based in Old College, the historic heart of the University of Edinburgh. Begun in 1789 to designs by Robert Adam, the building was completed in 1886 by William Playfair. Originally it housed the medical school, library and museum. Today it is home to the law school, central administration and the Talbot Rice Art Gallery. Internally the building has undergone a series of changes over the last 200 years, but it contains key historic rooms such as the Playfair and Georgian Libraries. Students were challenged to developed a variety of projects at different scales in various locations. They explored themes of home working, learning and the future of contemporary art galleries. Imbedded in the work was a consideration for the themes of equality, diversity, inclusion and sustainability. re:connect if formed of a series of elements. The video piece shows each student explaining their definition of what interior, architectural and spatial design means to them. Using their own language, they explain their personal response to that question. On the wall, posters by each student are combined to give a visual collage of their different design responses. Over marked with the initials of the programme it also represents the collaborative nature of the IASD programme- linking students through a shared journey of academic development. On the floor, the towers of varying heights are crowned with a box, detailing key information about the students. They have each selected three images from various projects that they feel best represent their design ethos. Alongside that is information on each of student, with a QR code linking you to their web presence within the ECA Degree Show Website 2021. Each student has also selected one word that to them defines what the programme taught them was a key consideration in defining the subject. You are encouraged to review these and also consider your own definition.
