Zhang Peili and Geng Jianyi, who have made pioneering historical contributions in the field of contemporary art, have also made a history of teaching contemporary art in colleges. The New Media Art Center, established in 2001, and then the New Media Department were among the first its likes in China. The establishment of this institution has profoundly affected the pattern of Chinese art education, and also explored its own unique concepts and methods in practice. Professor Zhang Peili proposed to stimulate teaching via creativity and integrate technology and creation organically. Students should reflect on the technology itself based on problems they encounter during the creation. The medium is no longer a simple technology or tool. How to construct a student's own unique artistic language is the core of teaching. Professor Geng Jianyi’s notion “Art can’t teach” seems to be the paradox of art teaching, but in fact shares the same concept with Professor Zhang’s. Both of them focus on finding possibilities from experiments, transforming students' inertial thinking, entering the state of “playing” in constant negation and reconstruction, and encouraging students to make timely mirror image observation. The exhibition brings together the works of these two professors and 13 outstanding students in their teaching career, which is also an important retrospective on the certain period in new media teaching of the China Academy of Art.
