Insonic Art
Insonic Art moves the audience closer into the aesthetic sphere of spatial audio, sound art, and multichannel media. In a time of overloaded and fragmented media, the subtlety of immersive sound and projected space offers new artistic qualities. Student works presented at FutureLab are primarily sound based and explore the meaning of sound in media art. They reflected on the form and content of acoustical experience and the characteristics of multichannel and hybrid environments. This involves dealing with 3D recording and reproducing systems, psychoacoustic perception and cognition as well as digital technologies for real-time spatial audio processing and introduces fascinating new capacities for creativity like algorithmic and generative composition or interactive music.
Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG)
The Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design focuses on media art, communication design, product design, exhibition design and scenography, art research and media philosophy. Studies are primarily project based and carried out in an interdisciplinary way. The teaching concept focuses on new technologies and related art theory. Due to its vicinity, there is an ongoing collaboration together with the Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe (ZKM) regarding exhibitions, concerts and research. The Sound Lab is supplied by the different approaches of the interdisciplinary projects’ diversity which can be divided into the areas of electronic and electroacoustic music, sound art installation and film sound. A core area of artistic research are aesthetic aspects of spatial audio and multichannel acoustic projection techniques such as High-order Ambisonics, wave field synthesis or novel sonic diffusion approaches. Hemispherical architecture of multichannel loudspeaker configurations in combination with a self-built wave field synthesis system at HfG and ZKM are the basis for exploring immersive projects. Equipped with high quality 4-channel Soundfield microphones and a 64-channel Eigenmike the HfG offers a unique platform for such artistic projects.
